Ants are the 3rd pest problem in the country. Ant control can be difficult, but there are some things you should know about how ants’ behavior can lead to big headaches for you and your home.

Characteristics:

Medium sized, mostly shiny ant with heart shaped abdomen that is often bent up over the thorax when ant is disturbed. Color variable from light reddish brown to brown or black. Slow to moderately fast moving ant. May forage in tight foraging trails similar to white-footed ant trails, but only acrobat ant bends the abdomen up over the thorax. Acrobat ants also run slower than white-footed ants when disturbed..

Diet:

Living and dead insects. Tend sap-sucking insects, collecting honeydew. Forage for sweets and protein in homes.A wide variety of food, including sweets, meats, and insects.

Nesting Sites::

Dead or rotted wood, including logs, stumps, dead tree branches. They occasionally nest in soil under stones. Indoors they nest in wall voids and rotted wood, especially window frames. They do not cause structural damage to buildings.
Mating Swarms:
July through September
 

Most Common Complaints:

Foragers outside. Control by reducing access to structures.
 

Pest control:

Check for nests, especially in rotted wood. Remove and destroy infested wood when possible. Nests can also be treated with an appropriate insecticide (do not treat firewood). If the nest is not obvious, treat the building perimeter spray with a residual insecticide.
For acrobat ants found indoors in voids, inject an insecticidal dust. When possible, replace rotted wood and correct moisture problems.
Spraying with pesticides.
